Docs for kafbat/kafka-ui#2016 (fixes kafbat/kafka-ui#759).

  • oauth2.md: new "Self-signed or private CA certificates" section covering auth.oauth2.ssl.truststore-location / truststore-password. It also explains that server.ssl.trust-store doesn't apply to OAuth provider connections.
  • misc-configuration-properties.md: adds AUTH_OAUTH2_SSL_TRUSTSTORELOCATION and AUTH_OAUTH2_SSL_TRUSTSTOREPASSWORD.

Please merge only after kafbat/kafka-ui#2016 is merged.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in configuration/authentication/for-the-ui/oauth2.md: Added guidance and a YAML example for configuring a custom OAuth-provider truststore when the provider certificate is not trusted by the default JVM truststore. The documentation states that issuer discovery, token, user-info, and JWKS requests can fail with PKIX path building failed; the custom truststore replaces the default for provider connections and must trust every configured provider. It also clarifies that server.ssl.trust-store applies only to incoming kafbat-ui TLS connections.
  • observed — Modified behavior in configuration/misc-configuration-properties.md: Added documentation for the OAuth2 provider JKS truststore location and password configuration properties.

Explanation

Issue #759 seeks OAuth2 provider truststore support. This PR documents auth.oauth2.ssl.truststore-location and truststore-password and distinguishes them from server.ssl.trust-store. The reviewed documentation does not establish that the application binds and applies these settings. The whole-PR diff was unavailable, so the presence or absence of the runtime implementation at the reviewed head cannot be verified.

I’m a rabbit with a JKS to carry,
For OAuth hosts whose certs look wary.
I follow the truststore’s given place,
And keep incoming TLS in its own space.
The property table makes the settings clear,
So I hop along with docs held near.

🌐 Web query:

site:github.com/kafbat/kafka-ui "AUTH_OAUTH2_SSL_TRUSTSTORELOCATION" OR "AUTH_OAUTH2_SSL_TRUSTSTOREPASSWORD" OR "truststore-location" main OAuth

💡 Result:

I found **no evidence on `main` of** `AUTH_OAUTH2_SSL_TRUSTSTORELOCATION` or `AUTH_OAUTH2_SSL_TRUSTSTOREPASSWORD` as supported settings.

The repo’s docs distinguish two cases:

- **Kafka/cluster truststore:** `KAFKA_CLUSTERS_0_SSL_TRUSTSTORELOCATION` and `...TRUSTSTOREPASSWORD` are documented for Kafka-related connections—not OAuth provider TLS. ([ui.docs.kafbat.io](https://ui.docs.kafbat.io/configuration/misc-configuration-properties?utm_source=openai))
- **OAuth provider with a self-signed certificate:** the FAQ’s suggested approach is configuring the application’s `server.ssl.trust-store` and `server.ssl.trust-store-password`. ([ui.docs.kafbat.io](https://ui.docs.kafbat.io/faq/faq?utm_source=openai))

The OAuth configuration docs describe client/provider settings but don’t establish the proposed `AUTH_OAUTH2_SSL_*` variables. So whether those exact names work is **not established by the sources I found**; they do not appear to be documented settings. ([ui.docs.kafbat.io](https://ui.docs.kafbat.io/configuration/authentication/for-the-ui/oauth2?utm_source=openai))

GitHub kafbat kafka-ui main OAuthProperties OAuthSecurityConfig OAuthSslSupport truststore SSL provider source

💡 Result:

I couldn’t verify a `OAuthSslSupport` class in `kafbat/kafka-ui`’s `main` branch from the available source results, so I can’t confirm that it exists or describe its implementation.

The closest relevant source confirms OAuth2 configuration is handled in `api/src/main/java/io/kafbat/ui/config/auth/OAuthSecurityConfig.java`; the repo’s current issue page also points to that file, but doesn’t establish anything about truststore handling or an SSL provider. (GitHub issue 1893 in kafbat/kafka-ui (link omitted to avoid creating a cross-reference))

For Kafka broker truststores, the repository’s SSL example configures `KAFKA_CLUSTERS_0_SSL_TRUSTSTORELOCATION` and `KAFKA_CLUSTERS_0_SSL_TRUSTSTOREPASSWORD`. That establishes broker SSL configuration, not OAuth client TLS configuration. ([github.com](https://github.com/kafbat/kafka-ui/blob/main/documentation/compose/kafka-ssl.yml?utm_source=openai))

The precise relationship among `OAuthProperties`, `OAuthSecurityConfig`, `OAuthSslSupport`, truststore settings, and an SSL provider remains unresolved from these sources.

Reactor Netty HttpClient create HTTPS default JVM trust store Spring Boot ConfigurationProperties ignoreUnknownFields default official documentation

💡 Result:

- **HTTPS / JVM trust store:** `HttpClient.create()` alone does **not** enable TLS. Add `.secure()` to enable HTTPS; the current Reactor Netty docs describe the SSL provider choice (OpenSSL if available, otherwise JDK) but do not explicitly establish that `.secure()` uses the JVM’s default trust store. So the default trust-store behavior is **not confirmed by these docs**; it can depend on Reactor Netty/Netty version and SSL configuration. ([github.com](https://github.com/reactor/reactor-netty/blob/main/docs/modules/ROOT/pages/http-client.adoc?utm_source=openai))
- **Spring Boot `@ConfigurationProperties`:** `ignoreUnknownFields` defaults to **`true`**, meaning unrecognized properties are ignored during binding. This is documented in the current Spring Boot API and in the 3.4 API. ([docs.spring.io](https://docs.spring.io/spring-boot/api/java/org/springframework/boot/context/properties/ConfigurationProperties.html?utm_source=openai))

No Reactor Netty version was specified, so the HTTPS trust-store point remains unresolved for your particular version.

site:projectreactor.io OR site:github.com/reactor/reactor-netty HttpClient HTTPS URI default SSL context trust manager HttpClient.create() 1.2 reference

💡 Result:

For Reactor Netty **1.2**, the reference guide shows `HttpClient.create()` making a request to an `https://` URI without an explicit `.secure()` call. That supports that HTTPS URIs trigger TLS automatically; `HttpClient.create()` itself is documented as preparing a pooled client. ([projectreactor.io](https://projectreactor.io/docs/netty/1.2.0-SNAPSHOT/reference/http-client.html))

The 1.2 API documents `.secure()` as enabling the **default SSL context**, with hostname verification enabled. It does **not** specify which trust manager or trust store that default context uses, so the cited Reactor Netty sources don’t establish that detail. ([projectreactor.io](https://projectreactor.io/docs/netty/1.2.18/api/reactor/netty/http/client/HttpClient.html?utm_source=openai))

**Version note:** the reference guide surfaced is 1.2.0-SNAPSHOT; the API source is 1.2.1. The 1.2.18 API also describes `.secure()`’s defaults, but doesn’t resolve the trust-manager detail. ([projectreactor.io](https://projectreactor.io/docs/netty/1.2.0-SNAPSHOT/reference/http-client.html?utm_source=openai))

Remove the OAuth truststore settings until the OAuth client supports them.

OAuthProperties does not bind auth.oauth2.ssl, and Spring Boot ignores unknown configuration properties. OAuthSecurityConfig.oauthWebClient() builds the client without a custom truststore; OAuth token, user-info, and JWKS requests use that client. The documented settings therefore cannot add the provider’s CA. A provider certificate rejected by the client’s default TLS handling can still cause OAuth requests to fail.

The truststore replaces the default one for OAuth provider connections only, so it has to contain the certificate (or CA) of every OAuth provider you configure.

Note that `server.ssl.trust-store` doesn't apply here: it only configures incoming TLS connections to kafbat-ui itself.

Update the FAQ that still recommends server.ssl.trust-store.

faq/faq.md Lines 49-56 still tells users with a self-signed OAuth provider to configure server.ssl.trust-store. This section says that setting applies only to incoming TLS, so the FAQ directs users to a setting that will not fix provider certificate validation. Replace the FAQ example with the new auth.oauth2.ssl properties or link to this section. (github.com)

This finding uses the existing FAQ example as cross-file context.
